Description
A must have pattern to reflect the Trout Spey paradigm for swinging soft hackle flies.
Tied in sizes 12-16, these flies are hand tied by me in Oregon and are tied on a per order basis. Using top quality materials, order a selection as part of your staple of flies when Early spring March Brown mayflies or any other neutral colored insects are hatching.
Also a great general purpose searching pattern. An extremely effective pattern here in Oregon during the late winter/early spring March Brown Hatch coming off on the lower McKenzie River and upper middle fork of the Willamette River in late February through the beginning of April as well as when the prolific hatches of tan colored caddis are on the water.
This version utilizes hares ear dubbing for body material ribbed with gold wire for durability. Most consider partridge for the hackle but I find it to be inconsistent in durability as well as feather quality.
I consider this the wet fly equivalent of the Adams Dry Fly as a first fly to tie on when unsure what to try firs. This pattern looks like nothing in particular, yet can imitate numerous bugs in the water. When there doesn’t appear to be any surface feeding activity, this is my go to pattern for searching with either my single handed 3wt micro skagit rod or my two handed 2wt or 3wt Trout Spey rods. Even with surface activity, this pattern has produced vicious hits from surface feeding trout as well when swung on a graded leader and swung just below the surface. Definitely a must have pattern for your fly box arsenel.
